We speak to Abhilasha Mondal on her transition from law to management consulting, tenure at Deloitte India, her choice to move to Canada for an MBA and how COVID is changing things
I think the best way to start this is by saying sorry :’( We have been fairly inactive for the past 6 months, primarily due to both founders moving on with full time jobs. And this is the 10th time we are starting it for the “First time”, hence bear with us !
We start with a topic that is close to our hearts: Going for further education post law. And MBA seems to be one of those roads which leads to careers outside the law or careers at the cusp of law and business. Especially useful is an MBA in the West which lets you change both (a) line of work; and (b) geography.
(b) (changing geographies) has become tricky now given that countries are closing their borders. Countries expect Canada.
Over the last few months Canada has been very active in terms of giving out PR’s and seems to be a destination candidates are looking at not only as a place to study in, but also as a country to settle in, post graduation.
Abhilasha chose Ivey Business School in London, Ontario. We take a quick look at her profile and the school’s profile:

Look forward to hearing more from Abhilasha during the session. In the meantime, grateful if she could address the following 3 questions:
(1) What were your factors in deciding the 1 year vs. 2 year MBA plan? I see a lot of people lean towards the former these days, but is there a particular reason/benefit in doing so? If so, what is the shortcoming in traditional 2 year MBA program from a duration perspective?
(2) How will studying in Ivey/Canada place you in terms of the US job market? Will you have to actively look at jobs in Canada only? (Assuming you do want to work in either US/Canada post MBA)
And (3) Purely from a lawyer pursuing an MBA perspective, does your pre-MBA work experience make a difference in terms of your applying for certain jobs after your MBA? (E.g. are PE/VC/buy side jobs more accessible to candidates with prior PE/VC job experience)
Thanks and cheers
